Invasive Roots

The hike: N/A, Norman Bird Sanctuary

Location: Middletown, RI

Approximate time: ~ 4 hours

Not a hike but an awesome opportunity to volunteer at a bird sanctuary that I’ve been hiking at for years. We spent the better part of the day digging up the roots of an invasive species in order for the sanctuary to grow a new herb garden to supply more food to a local food kitchen. We used shovels, pickaxes, and gloved hands to rip as many roots out of the ground as possible, all the while meeting and collaborating with the wonderful people at the sanctuary.

While I’m writing about it, the Norman Bird Sanctuary is a great place for an easy hike to a beautiful view of Second Beach. One of my favorite hikes here is the Hanging Rock Trail, which fittingly leads you to an overhanging rock right by the ocean.
