Rain or Shine
The hike: Bear Mountain Trail (2,323 feet)
Location: Salisbury, Connecticut
Approximate time: ~ 3.5 hours
Bear Mountain. The very top of the state of Connecticut. Or is it? This is a heavily debated highpoint since there technically exists a higher point in the state but the peak of that mountain is in Massachusetts. Anyways, we chose to hit the highest peak, and it didn’t disappoint.
Driving west towards the mountain, we were worried that the weather might not cooperate with spots of rain and sunshine alike. Nonetheless, we continued on and found ourselves under some intense sunlight for the beginning of the hike. After some light showers and more sunlight (thank you New England weather), we found ourselves at the top with blue skies and puffy white clouds. A couple important notes to make: depending on when you go, you might have trouble parking since the lot isn’t all that big. Also, the trail map says to turn left when the loop begins, which leads you on the fastest way up the mountain. Going right, though, leads you through the boring flat part of the hike first and saves the quick descent with great views for the latter half - that’s what we did.
